Google Mashups and Random Rambling

Ay…  It never ceases to amaze me the new applications being developed for Google’s maps.  From my old blog, I was apartment hunting this way 2 years ago:

[Another fine use of Google Maps – Apartment hunting in AUSTIN – NOT Georgia!]

How brilliant!

And NOW…  You can map your jogging routes and log your jogging times (and export a .csv version if you don’t like the way that the website manipulates and dipslays the data!) .   MapMyRun even shows the changes in elevation of your route.  Going a bit overboard for my needs or wants right now, but wow.  Truly a GIS for the masses.  And that elevation feature is so much more intuitive and simple than the ArcGIS procedure!

And again with the Google Maps street views feature…  It’s scary how Big Brother is watching us…  If you haven’t seen the YouTube parody, it’s pretty…  Brilliant.  And FYI, if you want to know who’s responsible for these street views, zoom to Google’s headquarters in Google Maps…  Hmm… I can’t seem to find it now, though I’ve seen it before…  So instead, here’s a link to top Google Street View Sightings…  I like #2…

But as much as we complain about incursions to our privacy, we often joyfully put our own information online for all to see, to wit, this blog!  But yes, also social networking sites…  and sites like LibraryThing.com where you can catalog your books online and share that list with the world!  (Yes, notice my exclamation points…)

No, I don’t want people, especially the  entire (wired) world, knowing where I’m jogging when…  So cool technology…  When utilized with extreme caution!!!  Buyer beware…
